A village made for quiet walks

Izaux is a small village set on the terraces of La Neste, surrounded by hills, woodland, farmland and mountain views. From the village, walks can be gentle and contemplative, following the river and small roads, or more adventurous, climbing towards viewpoints above the valley.

This is not a place of crowded trails or hurried tourism. It is a landscape of old stones, shifting light, birdsong, water, and the distant blue line of the mountains.

Walks from the house

From Le Moulin de La Neste, guests can begin with simple local walks: along the river, through Izaux, or towards nearby villages such as Lortet and La Barthe-de-Neste. These routes are ideal for a morning walk, a quiet afternoon, or a gentle introduction to the valley.

The old pilgrim road

Close to Izaux, near Lortet, runs the GR105: an old north-south route through the Aure Valley towards Spain. This way follows ancient lines of passage, linked to Roman routes and later used as a secondary path by pilgrims travelling towards Santiago de Compostela.

It is not a theatrical road. Its beauty is quieter than that. It belongs to the kind of landscape where people have crossed for centuries: shepherds, traders, travellers, pilgrims, and those simply looking for the next valley.

Interpretation trails in the Neste Valley

Nearby, the villages of La Barthe-de-Neste and Montoussé offer short interpretation trails that combine nature, heritage and local legends. These are excellent walks for guests who enjoy history, easy distances and a deeper sense of place.

Practical advice

Walking here is usually peaceful and accessible, but the landscape remains rural and sometimes uneven. Good shoes are recommended, even for shorter walks. In summer, bring water and sun protection. In spring and autumn, paths can be wet or muddy after rain.
